About The Exhibit

The 2nd annual Steelhead Festival brought a new batch of beautiful, unique sculptures to downtown Santa Barbara. All eight are now at their permanent homes--keep an eye out for them around town!

In 2006, eight 6ft. trout sculptures of individually designed steelhead trout were installed on State Street between Victoria and Cota -- the first public art to grace the city center in more than three years!

The orginal sculpture was designed by Willie Britt. Prototype Source, Inc. then fabricated 8 fiberglass sculptures, which were sponsored by local agencies and businesses, and decorated by nine local artists. The artwork was part of a week of events organized by CEC and other local and statewide groups to call attention to the rapid decline of one of the region’s most iconic – and endangered – species. The sculptures remained on State Street through April, after which they were moved to permanent locations such as El Capitan Canyon, the Santa Barbara Zoo, and CEC’s Watershed Resource Center at Arroyo Burro Beach.
